My Italian family has been making banana breads for generations. The recipe has been passed down from my great grandmother, grandmother, mother and to me. I have loved every piece of those yummy delicious breads, but I can't continue to make them as they are. I just can't use moderation when it comes to eating refined sugar and flours.
I have finally found a way to make it healthier, white flour and refined sugar- free and I'm pretty happy with the results. Of course my hubby is so accustomed to the traditional, unhealthy but decadent bread that he'll never be happy with the results. My kids on the other hand still love it just the same and so do I. I mean who can fault a banana bread with no oil, no sugar and it seriously has one gram of fat!!! I think its fabulous and I hope you will too! Adding a nice, healthy smoothie with that yummy bread would be even more wonderful!
Happy, Healthy baking to you!

Some recipes here are referred to as SUGAR FREE .... yet part of the ingredients may be blueberries or bananas.
That's not sugar free from the standpoint Carbs turn into sugar .... therefore, the recipe is maybe "No Sugar Added." There is plenty of sugar in a banana .....
Just curious as to your response. When looking at sugar contents, I look at BOTH carbs & sugar ......
Thank You.
Brenda
Hi Paulette,
I started my blog in 2011 and at that time in my life I was only white refined sugar free, not low carb. This recipe was written in 2011 and has not been adapted for low carb. I have been low carb for the last 3 years so recipes from 2014 to present, you will find are labeled as low carb.

What is the equivalent of six packets of stevia in Tablespoons?
April Driggers
I would love to know how much 6 packets of Stevia would be.... I buy big bags of Splenda... would love to substitute that but??? don't really know what to use.
Brenda
The amount of stevia to the amount of splenda would be quite different. Stevia is alot sweeter so you need a lot less. If I were to guess you could use 1/2 cup of splenda for this recipe.
Heather
Made this as mini muffins, and they turned out great. I made a crumb topping for the ones for the hubby, I'm sure he will love them too! Thanks for the awesome recipes!
lori
This was absolutely great. I made it with barley flour and just cut the banana's into the batter. I also used frozen blueberries.
Terri Cook
how much in teaspoons or tablespoons is 6 packets of stevia, we buy the liquid or bulk and do not have packets.

Hi, I really want to try this recipe out but struggling to find the whole wheat pastry flour. I have been to Coles and Woolworths but can't find it. I can locate wholemeal flour and flour that has wheat flour noted as an ingredient but nothing specifically called whole wheat pastry flour. There is pastry mix but I think that's more for shortbread and puff pastry. Is this special flour found at health shops or can I just use normal plain flour? Thanks
Brenda
I think it will still be good using whole wheat flour. I buy mine at Whole Foods, Job lot and online through iherb.com. I have a coupon code if you buy online, YAJ035.

This looks delicious i dont have any baking soda, just baking powder, my wholewheat flour is not pastry four and i dont have flaxseed meal...can i omit the flax seed use double the baking soda and use normal wholewheat do you think?
Brenda
hmmm that is quite a few adaptions. Whole wheat flour is alot heavier and dense. Not sure if you double the baking soda how it will work for you. You can certainly omit the flaxseed without problem.

These were so delicious. I substituted oat bran for the wheat flour and chia seeds in place of the flax seed meal...and they turned out great. Thank you so much for putting such great sugar free recipes. I bake almost weekly now because of how good these treats are. The best part is my husband and I happily enjoy it without the guilt! Can't wait to try more of your goodies.
Brenda
You're welcome, glad you enjoyed the recipe!

So glad I made these tonight! Finally a good wheat flour recipe that isn't dry. I made 12 muffins and one small loaf of bread with the recipe listed. I've been doing P90X for years and have wanted more recipes to fit the nutrition portion of the program. Your recipes are perfect! I will definitely be making this one again. Thank you!!
Kathryn Clark
Could you use egg substitue for the eggs?
Brenda
Yes but I haven't tried it. Let me know if you do.
Bonnie
Could I substitute chia seeds for the flax meal?
Brenda
I haven't tried it but one tablespoon should be fine to replace with.

Getting ready to make this for the second time! It'll be a great surprise for the kiddos when they get home from school. They loved it last time! Great way to get my picky one to eat blueberries. Looking forward to trying it with the whole wheat pastry flour this time ( all I had on hand last time was the white wheat whole wheat flour). Thanks for the recipe!!
Brenda
So glad you and they liked it!
Rachel
This is delicious. I added a 1/4 tsp pure orange extract.
Heather

Wonderful recipe! It turned out exactly like in the picture and tastes as good as I hoped it would. Ive recently rid myself of the white flour and refined white sugar. Too soon to tell maybe but I feel good and Im craving it less.
Can't wait to go through some more of your recipes!
Brenda
YEAH!! SO glad you liked it and good job getting rid of the white stuff!!! Awesome! And thanks for letting me know how you liked it, I love to hear that!

This looks wonderful! I am going to make it tonight. Do you think it will turn out ok if I exchange the whole wheat flour for an all purpose Gluten Free mix?
Brenda
I think it will be fine. I haven't worked with gluten free flour so I'm not sure how the texture and moistness will compare. Please let me know how it turns out. Thanks!
