Iced Bulletproof Coffee (Keto and Low Carb)

This Creamy Iced Bulletproof Coffee is not only Keto, Low carb and Sugar Free, but perfect for keeping you refreshed and full for hours!

What is Bulletproof Coffee?

The basic philosophy behind this keto coffee is that is adds butter and MCT oil to your typical coffee providing satiation to help you abstain from eating breakfast.  If you’re on a keto diet, you know intermittent fasting is key in weight loss and enjoying this luscious, buttery, creamy coffee in the morning makes it very easy to skip breakfast. I can’t take the credit for the Bulletproof coffee phenomenon, it was Dave Asprey, author of The Bulletproof Diet.

Why MCT Oil?

You might be thinking, “Butter in coffee? Gross!” But don’t knock it till you try it my friends! I had felt the same way and once I did finally try it, I was blown away. The taste is the creamiest I’ve ever had and the fullness that comes with it is even better!

But then you might be thinking, why MCT oil? MCT’s are medium-chain triglycerides, a form of saturated fatty acid that has numerous health benefits. Yes coconut oil is an MCT oil, but MCT oil is a more concentrated source of fat that creates energy which almost instantly converts your body to using ketones. This is exactly what we’re looking for when it comes to being keto adapted.

Bulletproof Coffee Extras

Once you’ve enjoyed the basic bulletproof hot coffee with just those 3 basic ingredients, you may want to try playing around with other extra deliciousness. I really love adding a pinch fo salt and vanilla stevia to mine. You can also try adding in some Vital Protein Collagen Peptides for some extra protein if you’re planning on using this coffee more as a meal than just to hold you over in between two meals.

This Iced Bulletproof coffee recipe I’m sharing today is simply as an afternoon snack for me, perfect between lunch and dinner.

Brenda’s Notes:

  • You can use decaf or caffeinated coffee for this. I brew extra coffee in the morning, stick it in the fridge and by the afternoon I can make this keto coffee recipe!
  • Whatever you do, don’t sub coconut oil for the MCT oil, it will clump and harden and that will be the grossest coffee you’ve ever had.
  • Feel free to go without sweetener if you prefer or use your choice of sugar free sweetener to taste.
  • You can eliminate the xanthin gum if you choose, but it helps make a wonderful thicker coffee almost like a smoothie!

I love this recipe. I will however change the sweetener as the stevia has an after taste Iโ€™m not fond of. I had to sub the heavy cream cause there wasnโ€™t any at my local store so I used what I had which was full fat cream cheese 2 tbsp and <1/4 2% milk. Everything else I kept and it came out great kept me satisfied for hours. As the recipe says itโ€™s two servings I saved the other one in the fridge for the next day and besides a little separation at the bottom, it still tasted good. So I guess you can make it ahead. Thanks Brenda!

  2. Hot Bulletproof coffee with butter and MCT oil doesn’t break an intermittent fast. I drink that instead of having breakfast every morning. But will using heavy cream with the cold version instead of the butter also not break the fast? It’s really hot now and I’m finding I prefer cold coffee in the morning, If this option with cream doesn’t break the IF, that would be amazing.

    1. Hi Judy,
It depends on who you ask or listen to regarding what breaks a fast. Some “experts” say butter and MCT oil does in fact still break your fast and some do not. Some say anything that is over 50 calories no matter if it’s cream or butter, does break a fast. So really it’s a controversial topic and one you have to decide if it will work for you or against you. 1 tablespoon of butter has twice the calories and fat as 1 tablespoon of heavy cream and both have little to no amounts of carbs depending on the brand you purchase. Hope that helps!

    2. If whatever you consume during a fast increases your blood sugar, it breaks your fast.

  3. Hi – quick question: I notice that the recipe says to blend the ice in the blender and also pour it over ice. Did you mean to do one or the other or do you do both?

    1. I do both because I like it really cold but you could skip the pouring it over ice and just pour in a glass.

    1. I wouldn’t have it in the evening as it is meant to provide energy, so morning or early afternoon the latest.

  4. Thank you for this recipe, Brenda! I definitely am in love with Bulletproof coffee and I do 20g total carbs per day on Keto so I need it to keep me satiated with little to no carbs. I will have to try it iced!
Currently I am using Salted Caramel K-cups from Aldi in mine with MCT oil, grass-fed butter, Himalayan pink salt, Stevia, and just recently added a scoop of collagen powder.
You are the sweetest, Brenda. Keto on! ?

  5. I tried bulletproof coffee this morning just using mct oil and a tablespoon of butter (cold) in a cup of cold brew coffee. I put all ingredients in my high power blender. The butter was just a curdled looking blob. How do I come out with a frothy looking mixture?

    1. If you choose to use cold brew, itโ€™s best to use heavy cream in place of butter. Optionally, you can use freshly brewed hot coffee with butter. Just pour the coffee, mct oil and butter into the blender and blend well. The hot coffee melts the butter.

  6. Great recipe
Can you make it in advanced and put it in the fridge afterwards? Also, can it be subbed as a meal?

  7. Hey, Thank you for coffee recipe, I really really like the way you explained it, Me and my family this coffee so iโ€™m going to try this one in upcoming weekend where we set together once in a week so this will be amazing
