Iced Bulletproof Coffee (Keto and Low Carb)

This Creamy Iced Bulletproof Coffee is not only Keto, Low carb and Sugar Free, but perfect for keeping you refreshed and full for hours!

What is Bulletproof Coffee?

The basic philosophy behind this keto coffee is that is adds butter and MCT oil to your typical coffee providing satiation to help you abstain from eating breakfast.  If you’re on a keto diet, you know intermittent fasting is key in weight loss and enjoying this luscious, buttery, creamy coffee in the morning makes it very easy to skip breakfast. I can’t take the credit for the Bulletproof coffee phenomenon, it was Dave Asprey, author of The Bulletproof Diet.

Why MCT Oil?

You might be thinking, “Butter in coffee? Gross!” But don’t knock it till you try it my friends! I had felt the same way and once I did finally try it, I was blown away. The taste is the creamiest I’ve ever had and the fullness that comes with it is even better!

But then you might be thinking, why MCT oil? MCT’s are medium-chain triglycerides, a form of saturated fatty acid that has numerous health benefits. Yes coconut oil is an MCT oil, but MCT oil is a more concentrated source of fat that creates energy which almost instantly converts your body to using ketones. This is exactly what we’re looking for when it comes to being keto adapted.

Bulletproof Coffee Extras

Once you’ve enjoyed the basic bulletproof hot coffee with just those 3 basic ingredients, you may want to try playing around with other extra deliciousness. I really love adding a pinch fo salt and vanilla stevia to mine. You can also try adding in some Vital Protein Collagen Peptides for some extra protein if you’re planning on using this coffee more as a meal than just to hold you over in between two meals.

This Iced Bulletproof coffee recipe I’m sharing today is simply as an afternoon snack for me, perfect between lunch and dinner.

Brenda’s Notes:

  • You can use decaf or caffeinated coffee for this. I brew extra coffee in the morning, stick it in the fridge and by the afternoon I can make this keto coffee recipe!
  • Whatever you do, don’t sub coconut oil for the MCT oil, it will clump and harden and that will be the grossest coffee you’ve ever had.
  • Feel free to go without sweetener if you prefer or use your choice of sugar free sweetener to taste.
  • You can eliminate the xanthin gum if you choose, but it helps make a wonderful thicker coffee almost like a smoothie!

  1. How is this only 128 Calories? A tablespoon of MCT is typically between 100-130 calories depending on brand, and a tablespoon of heavy cream is around 50. There are also calories, although very minute, in cinnamon and xanthan gum.

  2. Since MCT oil can be costly Iโ€™ve been using olive oil. IT taste great but didnโ€™t know it was still as good as MCT oil.

  3. Tip for using coconut oil: blend with HOT coffee — tastes soooo creamy and blends well – coffee looks lighter in colour as if milk/milk product was added.

  4. Do you find that the met oil clumps with the ice when blending ? My oil did so I switched to powdered met oil but I still find it gets clumpy with the ice

    1. No I didn’t notice any clumping with my MCT oil but the powder is a great idea too. I’m surprised it still clumps in your blender though. Maybe it’s the brand you’re using?

  5. Instead of using cream do you think I’d be able to use coconut milk or would that be likely to solidify due to the ice, similar to the butter? Thanks

  6. Just tried a half portion, because I didโ€™t want to wait until my icecubes were solid frozen. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I used freeze-dried-instant-decaf coffee and it tasted great!

    Thank you for this recipe.

  7. Thank you so very much! I am not a hot coffee drinker I always pour my black coffee into a cup of ice and I drink it black . I could not handle the bullet coffee hot so I havenโ€™t even drink it since I tried it once and it made me sick . I made this today with MCT oil and heavy cream and I forgot to blend ice with all the other ingredients . However I did pour over ice and put it in my contigo cup. I cross my fingers before I tasted it and said a prayer hoping Iโ€™ll be able to like it . I did ! Yay! Hallelujah ! Yes itโ€™s just that wonderful now I can finally drink the keto coffee . Your recipe was the first one I ever found that I could put on ice thank you so very much !

  8. Can I substitute coconut cooking oil (stays liquid) only ingredient is coconut oil, for the mct?

  9. I’ve tested the ice coffee, coconut oil and butter. The garbage disposal didn’t like it either ?. It got solidish, looked like curdling…. That was the last of the coffee that day. I will need to pick up some MCT oil, and try it with heavy cream. Thanks for the tip !!!!

  10. I’ve never had bulletproof coffee before and I’m really curious to try this now. A cup of this creamy drink would be the perfect afternoon-pick-me-up, however, I won’t be able to find MCT oil that fast. Could I add any alternatives?

  11. I have a powedered MCT oil, would this work as well?

Thank you for the great recipe. Iโ€™m new to Keto dieting and Iโ€™m excited to try new recipes.

  12. I’m new to this low carb keto diet so I have a question that I didn’t see an answer for in the replies above and if there is one I missed it and apologize. Using the MCT oil will my drink be oily? I see above that the zantham gum will make it like a smoothie which I think I’ll leave out because I don’t want it thick.

    1. Nope it won’t be oily at all as long as you blend in the blender. If you try to stir it with a spoon it will all be at the top of the glass and that is yucky!

  13. This is great!! I do much better on iced drinks rather than hot. I use MCT powder rather than the oil. But I could switch to coconut oil for an occasional drink.

  14. BTW, I heard years ago that, if your coffee is bitter, just add a pinch of salt! I’ve used that trick for years, and it works great! Might be the reason that pinch of salt makes everything “marry” so nicely! Looks great — can’t wait to try it!

    1. hahah I had no idea and thank you for telling me you heard that, now I know why i love it so! Thank you!

  15. I can add that making coffee ice cubes will make an iced coffee even better!
    Thank you for the recipe!!!

  16. Thank you for sharing this! Do you brew your iced coffee the same strength as you would the hot? Iโ€™ve been doing the hot BP coffee and I love how it curbs my appetite in the morning…but I miss my iced coffee…thanks!

    1. I brewed a bit stronger for the iced so instead of 2 scoops of coffee I used 3 in mine then refrigerated it.

    1. Right because it will clump when making an iced bulletproof coffee, so in place of the butter is the heavy cream.

  17. I have been drinking hot bullet proof coffee with coconut oil for several months. At first I though greasy coffee, NO WAY. I do put powdered stevia and a little cocoa powder and salt. I put it in the blender to get a froth on top. It is sooooo good.

    1. If you want to go easier than cleaning a blender, you can buy a small milk frother. Bodum makes one for 7 dollars and it works great! And no cleaning it or measuring into a blender!

  18. I love my bulletproof coffee, but anything over 50 calories breaks a fast, so having this early morning doesn’t help with intermittent fasting. I usually have a coffee with my husband around 6:30am with collagen and a dash of flavored almond milk creamer, making sure it is under 50 calories so I maintain my fast. Then I can have my BPC later in the morning when I get hungry, usually 9-10am. If I haven’t eaten since 7pm, the previous day, my fast is 14-15 hours doing it this way.

    1. I’ve heard some say that’s true but I’ve stayed in ketosis (checked by blood testing) in my morning bulletproof coffee even using butter and MCT oil. I think the key is that you don’t want to spike insulin during a fast and if going over a certain calorie amount makes that happen then right I wouldn’t do it. But this recipe is my afternoon snack after I’ve broken my fast with my lunch meal and a few hours before I eat my dinner meal.
