Healthy Cottage Cheese Cheesecake

This high protein mini cheesecake has a high protein content because of swapping some of the cream cheese in traditional cheesecake with cottage cheese.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a classic cheesecake but now that I’m over 50 I understand the importance of prioritizing protein at all costs to maintain the muscle I have as I age. Studies also show that a higher protein diet can help satiate and reduce cravings if you’ve got a sweet tooth.

Regardless if you’re on a ketogenic diet or not, maintaining muscle is the key to good health as we grow older.

I’ve been following a keto diet since 2015 and low carb diet before that. I started creating my sugar free recipes since 2011 on my website.

Besides amazing keto desserts I have a ton of family friendly low carb and keto breakfasts, appetizers, lunches, and main entrees of all kinds and especially for picky kids and picky husbands.

Keeping some of the traditional ingredients I use in my low carb cheesecake recipe like sour cream and cream cheese, and then adding a cup of cottage cheese has created an amazing velvety texture that is just as good as the larger version I have shared.

Cottage cheese is a good source of protein and I eat it every day and also add it to many of my keto low carb new recipes.

No Bake Cheesecake versus Baked Cheesecake

The difference between the two kinds of cheesecakes is really in the cream cheese mixture.

A traditional cheesecake that’s baked, adds eggs and is more thick and dense in texture. A no bake cheesecake isn’t as thick and dense, more lighter in texture and no eggs are required so it’s an easy dessert.

The beauty of cottage cheese cake without eggs is that you can taste and adjust the sweetener for your taste buds and not worry about getting sick from eating raw eggs in a cheesecake batter.

I love no bake cheesecake recipes since you don’t need any baking time or a water bath which is time consuming.

Both kinds of keto cheesecakes still have delicious flavor so you really can’t go wrong especially if you’re following a keto diet!

Can I swap the cottage cheese?

Yes if you don’t want cottage cheese you could swap it with Ricotta cheese for the same amount of protein but more fat and carbs.

You could also swap with Greek yogurt but will have less protein with that option, though it still works for a creamy texture.

Our high protein cottage cheese cheesecake doesn’t need any protein powder or keto flours like almond flour. All nutritional information is at the bottom of this page on the printable recipe card.

Can I use low fat cottage cheese instead?

If you want to lower the fat in this keto cheesecake recipe you can use low fat instead of full fat cottage cheese.

You can also use low fat cream cheese if you prefer. I don’t think it will alter the creamy filling and in this high protein cheesecake.

Can I skip the water bath?

You can skip adding water to the bottom of the pan when baking, but it could unevenly cook the cheesecake and cause cracking in the center of the cheesecake. Just add a little water to the pan for best results.

Can I add a pie crust?

I don’t think the cottage cheesecake needs a crust, but if you really want to add one, you can use my no bake crust recipe for the cheesecake crust for this baked cottage cheese cheesecake.

Can I change the low carb sweetener used?

Yes you can use any low carb sweetener you like in this keto cheesecake recipe and if you prefer sugar or maple syrup feel free to use that.

Real sugar or maple syrup will add a significant amount of carbs and sugar to this healthy cheesecake recipe.

Ingredients

Optional flavoring: 1 teaspoon of each lemon zest, lemon juice

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.ย
  • Add all ingredients, except eggs, into a food processor or high powered blender and blend until smooth. You could add to a large bowl and blend with an electric hand mixer if you don't have a food processor.
Taste for sweetness and add more if needed. Then add eggs and blend again. If adding a crust mixture, spread that onto the bottom of springform pan first. Pour cheesecake filling into a 6 inch spring form pan or 4- six ounce ramekins.
  • Place pan or ramekins onto a small baking sheet pan. Add some hot water to the bottom of the pan which will help even cooking.ย
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes or until center is set, firm but still jiggly. Refrigerate 1-2 hours. Add toppings and enjoy!
  • Storage: Cover any leftover cheesecake with plastic wrap or store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 7 days.ย
