Sometimes they're green, sometimes they're not. 🙂 But one thing remains in a good smoothie that will hold you over until your next snack or meal, PROTEIN.
As long as it has a good dose of healthy protein in it, then it's a win to me. My protein of choice lately and in the last few smoothie creations has been 100% pasteurized egg whites. Why you ask? Simply because I like how creamy they make my smoothie and I can feel good about giving them to my kids if they want what I'm drinking.
Some of my smoothies contain protein powder and with them I make sure to find the pure- est I can without lots of additives and sugars, but lately I just want what's natural and egg whites are it. As long as you purchase the carton that says they have been pasteurized there won't be a problem. If you are lucky enough to raise your own chickens or know someone who does then of course that is even better. Either way this smoothie is a nice dose of fruity flavor with creamy coconut milk and honestly no egg white taste is noticeable in the least. I promise you! And of course if you are a green smoothie lover feel free to throw in a handful of fresh spinach! 😉
I've teased my Instagram friends with this smoothie many times and finally got around to sharing the recipe!
*You can use fresh strawberries but it will not be as cold and adding ice will dilute the smoothie.

Just found your website and have been eating gluten-free and lactose-free for a short time only. I am making your banana muffins right now, they smell great. I never have heard of egg whites in a protein smoothie. Is it safe to drink the egg yolk or egg whites? I cannot find dehydrated egg whites where I live. Thanks for all the great help!
Brenda
I purchase pasteurized in carton from the market, not dehydrated ones. It is safe if they are pasteurized or maybe farm fresh ones.
Monica
Can you use bananas instead, and if yes how much?
Brenda
Probably 2.

Would dehydrated egg whites work? I bought some but haven't used them yet.
Brenda
I've never used them. please try it and let me know.

I make a strawberry coconut protein smoothie, but I use Sunwarrior protein powder. I keep cartons of egg whites in my fridge all the time, but have never put them into smoothies. It weirds me out a bit. I know it's safe, I'm just not sure what it would be like in my drink. But maybe I should be a little more adventurous!

Hey Brenda, I actually looked up how to pasteurize egg whites, cause it's too pricey for me to buy them done, and it's easy. So I will be saving money.....nice
Brenda
that is awesome Rhonda! Didn't know you could do them yourself!

This looks delish! I had never added egg whites to my smoothies til I found your site. But now, I LOVE it! The protein benefit is great and you can't taste it at all. I agree, the key to a filling smoothie is the protein! Thx for another great one 🙂
Brenda
thank you Leigh Anne!

For your consideration..........
I have learned that raw egg whites block the absorption of biotin in the body and that they should only be eaten cooked.
I have also learned that the yolk is an awesome protein and is not "bad" for cholesterol unless it is cooked..... then it becomes oxidized. Raw it is harmless in that way.....
So in smoothies, I use raw egg yolk.........adds creaminess... tons of good protein and vitamins and does not alter the taste
For cooking eggs...........the best and healthiest way is cooking "over easy" so the whites are cooked and the yolk is still runny. Really great for dipping hot buttered toast! LOL
Just my thoughts................
