SUGAR FREE CHOCOLATE CREAM PIE

This is the most luscious, smooth, delicious sugar free chocolate cream pie you have ever had! Deep rich chocolate flavor and a creamy pudding like consistency makes this a heavenly keto dessert for the holidays!

“How will I ever survive without chocolate? Will I never be able to have a piece of chocolate cake for my birthday again? How can this be manageable?” These were the thoughts in my head 10 years when I first decided to try living without sugar and refined flours for 6 weeks.

6 Weeks of agony as I had to deny my sweet tooth and abstain. Utter Torture.

But then I discovered I could make the things I love without the sugar. Maybe they wouldn’t compare, but I had to try and try I did. And I kept trying and I keep trying and creating recipes for over 14 years now!

My Sugar Addiction

I can’t help myself, I have a sweet tooth, there is no denying. I have a thing for chocolate and I won’t be ashamed. I had a little relapse when I got pregnant with my 3rd child and decided I didn’t have an issue with sugar and I would just enjoy myself and then remove it after I gave birth.

He will be 16,  three days after Christmas which always brings  me back to that desperation I felt when I realized I was a sugar addict and I was worse than I really thought. I had no idea until I tried to remove the sugar and detox myself.

You see the first time I did it was purely to lose the baby weight from my 2nd child, I didn’t think I had a problem. I don’t think any addict realizes they have a problem until they try to stop whatever it is they are consuming and can’t get enough of.

Sugar Freedom

By the grace of God and support from a wonderful wise older mentor type mom, I was able to break free back in 2006 and have NEVER touched the white stuff since.

I remember that desperation and I never want to feel that way again. I have sugar freedom and I can still enjoy dessert and chocolate and pies as long as I make them sugar free. I can’t tell you why I ever got addicted to sugar, but it happened and it was real.

But today I live a life free from sugar addiction and I am grateful. My entire journey to keto is documented in my new cookbook, Naturally Keto . I’ve also created some sugar detox courses to help those of you who have struggled as I once did!

HOW TO MAKE SUGAR FREE CHOCOLATE CREAM PIE

INGREDIENTS

You need a fabulous low-carb pie crust, I used my Easy Keto Pie Crust for this recipe. You also need heavy cream, unsweetened cocoa powder, xanthan gum, sea salt, chocolate liquid stevia or another low-carb sweetener of choice, sugar free chocolate chips, eggs, and vanilla extract.

DIRECTIONS

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Whisk the heavy cream and cocoa powder in a sauce pan. Sprinkle and whisk in xanthan gum, salt and stevia . Bring to a boil.

Reduce to simmer for 3-4 minutes until it thickens like pudding.

Remove from heat and add chocolate chips. Stir until smooth then set aside.

Add the rest of the ingredients to a stand mixer and blend until smooth.

Pour a small amount of the chocolate mixture into the egg mixture and blend on low to temper the egg mixture. Add a little bit more at a time so you don’t cook the eggs.

Add the rest of the chocolate mixture into the stand mixer and blend until combined well.

Pour into prepared pie shell and cover the crust edges with aluminum foil so it doesn’t burn.

Bake for 25-30 minutes until center is set but still slightly jiggly.

Cool slightly then refrigerate to set for 6 hours or overnight.

Top with homemade whipped cream and chocolate shavings if desired.

CAN THE SWEETENERS BE SWAPPED?

Yes if you don’t have chocolate liquid stevia you can swap it with any low-carb sweetener you prefer.

Here is my Sweetener Guide & Conversion Chart to help you figure out how much to use to replace the chocolate stevia.

I am grateful I can still have chocolate cream pie without the desire to eat the whole thing! Stevia doesn’t make me crave and that’s what I’m sticking with. If I can do it, anyone can! Now go and enjoy some chocolate cream pie!

  1. I need help finding chocolate recipes, I am on Atkins recemended by my husbands Dr. and I am a chocolate, sweets, cake, pudding anything addiction person. I thought by now I would be over it 2+mo. so I don’t derail my husband or me got to find recipes 5 carbs per serving so I can eat it every day

  2. I made this chocolate cream pie yesterday for my dad and it turned out delicious! I was afraid of would have a bitter stevia aftertaste, but you can barely taste the stevia. It was chocolatey, smooth and rich. As an added plus, I’ve never made a cream pie before but it was pretty easy and turned out just right. Thank you so much! I never thought a stevia-sweetened dessert could be so good!

    1. 5 stars
My dad liked it so much, he had me make a second one as soon as the first one was gone. He has a piece every night, lol. And one tip: sprinkling a little salt on top of the pie helps bring out the flavor even more.

  3. This is to the September 16th response,

I tried to use exactly what you used. I bought the sweetleaf stevia, I had to search all over for it. I even went to this high end really snooty health food store where everything is way over priced and pretty much only rich people shopped at. I finally found sweetleaf in a hyvee health food section. I could not find Lilys chocolate chips anywhere though. I used a nestle brand I think. Still sugar free. I really think it was the stevia that I was tasting but I can try to find Lilys chips and try again. It cost over $50 dollars just to make the first pie. They are cheaper after that first one but that’s an expensive investment to fail at. I don’t really want to try again until I’m sure I’ll get it right.

    1. I buy most of all the things I use in my recipes through iherb.com and it’s more afforable. In fact you can use my discount code as well: YAJ035

    2. Iโ€™m trying this pie out for dessert for Christmas. The filling tastes yummy! Couldnโ€™t help trying it when I scraped the bowl ?

  4. I followed the instructions exactly and while it looked good the pie was way too sweet. I used measuring cups to make sure I got the exact amount of stevia and i read somewhere else that one dropper is equal to one teaspoon. That definitely wasn’t the case. I had to use 4 droppers to get one teaspoon. Does that sound right to you or was there definitely something off about my measurements?

    1. First tell me the brands/types of stevia you used. 1 dropper is defintely no equal to 1 teaspoon. If you used NuNaturals lqiuid stevia, instead of what I used which is Sweetleaf, the two are not the same in sweetness. In fact liquid stevia vary in sweetness among all brands. Also the sugar free chocolate chips could be the difference, which brand did you use?

  5. maybe others have posted this question, but what sub. for arrowroot power can be used for keeping it low carb??

  6. I have to admit I hadnt read to the end and I had pre-cooked the crust and since the filling was cooked and thick I put the filling in the crust and refrigerated it and it was great. I want to try it the way you had posted to see how that tastes. So I don’t pre-bake the crust?

  7. I am making this for tonight and I was surprised you bake it. I’ve never baked a cream pie before. Is this correct?

  8. I LOVE chocolate cream pie. It always reminds me of my grandmother. She always made one at Christmas…well except hers was packed full of sugar…haha. I love that yours is sugar free ๐Ÿ™‚

  9. I had the same thoughts when I went {refined} sugar free — I wasn’t sure it was even feasible! Granted, I cheat every now and then but overall, sugar turned out to be the least of my worries. Abstaining from pasta is much MUCH harder ๐Ÿ˜‰ This pie is a dream come true!! Chocolate and cream…. I couldn’t ask for more!!

  10. It’s amazing how much better I feel when I’m not eating sugar – but I’ve never gone completely without refined flours… if I ever decide to try that too – I know where to look for recipes – your cookbook! Congrats!

  11. Do you travel for interventions???? I ate a wee too much cookie dough last night…ugh. You’d never guess this gorgeous pie was sugar free. You amaze me, Brenda!

  12. I think I’m addicted to sugar. I really do. I pour dozens and dozens of tablespoons of sugar down my throat every day. I need to take a couple of pages from your book and be sugar-free too. I’ve got a box of Z Sweet in the pantry. I’ll start there.

    1. hey girls and guys,

I too am a big time addict to sugar and just can’t seem to do without it……….I have to lose weight and follow a healthy plan because I have to go back to my heart dr. in February and need to lose about 30 pounds!!!!!! HELP!!! any suggestions or ideas about how to eat sugar free ( without food tasting like cardboard) would be greatly appreciated. thanks in advance, Donna Perkins, Wetumpka, Alabama

    2. Learn to substitute sugar with either Stevia, Sweet and Low, or Splenda. Avoid Equal, it’s aspartame and very dangerous. Don’t buy any commercial drinks. Make your own ice tea with your choice of artificial sweetener. Learn to bake with sugar substitutes. As long as you don’t have a diabetes issue you can safely eat small amounts of cake made with substitute sugars and there are sugar free frostings available. But remember, just because something is sugar free, it doesn’t mean it’s low cal. Don’t overdo it, especially if you’re trying to lose weight.
Splenda, Sweet and Low and Stevia can be used in both cold and hot drinks, but using it in coffee and hot tea takes some getting used to. At first, I’d suggest mixing 1/2 and 1/2 in your sugar bowl until you get used to the taste or you can try honey which is less fattening than refined sugar.
