This instant sugar free keto chocolate mousse recipe takes just a minute to whip up and is packed with 19 grams of protein!
Keto Chocolate Mousse Recipe
Cottage cheese has become a healthier option thanks to Lainie Cooks on TikTok who first shared this healthy ice cream recipe. It quickly became a viral ice cream recipe because of how simple the ice cream base is to make.
The different flavors for this high protein dessert are endless! Curbs the chocolate cravings and a sweet tooth! Our healthy dessert has 19 grams of protein per serving!
Users on Tiktok- make it using full-fat cottage cheese and a sweetener of choice and then you can add other add-ins like fresh fruit or almond butter or natural peanut butter.
The only thing that didn't work for me was that Lainie and other bloggers are using maple syrup or honey to sweeten the cottage cheese mixture. I use a keto-friendly sweetener and made it a sugar free ice cream recipe perfect if you're on a keto diet or low-carb diet.
Cottage Cheese Dessert Recipes
If you're looking for ways to increase your protein intake, cottage cheese is an excellent source of protein and is super versatile for savory and sweet recipes.
As a nutritional therapy practitioner I know the importance of daily protein intake and as someone who has been sugar free for 17 years now, I also know that protein satiates like no other macronutrient. It also helps reduce a sweet craving. I personal consumption of daily protein is anywhere from 100-125 grams.
Lactaid 4% Cottage Cheese nutritional info according to the app Cronometer in ½ cup serving has 13 g protein, 5 g total grams of carbs, 5 g fat and 110 calories along with a good amount of calcium, potassium and sodium.
My printable recipe card is at the bottom of this blog post.
As a recipe developer food blogger, I've been creating cottage cheese recipes for years in savory and sweet low carb recipes, like my Spinach pie and my high-protein snack chocolate smoothie.
Now I've added to my cottage cheese recipes using simple ingredients for a sweet treat! I've brought you my Sugar Free Peanut Butter Cottage Cheese Ice Cream and my Whipped Cottage Cheese Pudding.
If you're not a fan of cottage cheese I also have some savory recipes that you really can't tell, like my Cottage Cheese Pancakes and Cottage Cheese Muffins.
Whipped Cottage Cheese
My whipped cottage cheese pudding recipe would also work as a chocolate cottage cheese pudding recipe by adding the same components as this mousse recipe.
But a cottage cheese chocolate pudding is just a different texture and not as thick as this mousse recipe, but both will still have all the chocolate flavor!
Best Cottage Cheese Brands
Full-fat cottage cheese is best for this, either 4% or 2% cottage cheese will yield the best results.
You can find many options for cottage cheese at your local grocery store, but specific brands vary in taste and texture.
I don't recommend fat free cottage cheese because it won't be as satisfying as full fat cottage cheese or as creamy.
I like to use lactose free cottage cheese since my daughter and I both have lactose intolerance.
The brand I like best is Green Valley organic, but Lactaid is also a great brand as is the Good Culture brand.
Tools for Cottage Cheese Low Carb Chocolate Mousse
Food Processor- Many of the cottage cheese recipes use a food processor and while this works well, if you don't have one, you can choose these other options below.
High-Speed Blender- I used my Vitamix because it is a high speed blender and works well to remove the clumps of cottage cheese in just a couple of minutes.
If you don't have either of these kitchen tools you could add all ingredients to a large mixing bowl and use an electric hand mixer to blend until smooth.
I don't think an immersion blender would be strong enough to whip this mixture up well enough to get it smooth.
Can I leave out the collagen?
If you leave out the collagen, it will not be a mousse, it will be looser in consistency. If you're ok with that, you can certainly leave it out, but it does add more protein grams of protein.
Without the collagen you are looking at 13 g protein instead of 19 grams.
Can I swap the collagen with whey protein powder?
Yes, if you don't have collagen peptides on hand for this recipe, you could simply swap with whey chocolate protein powder.
Can I swap out the cocoa powder?
If you don't have unsweetened cocoa powder on hand, you can swap it out with sugar free keto chocolate chips. I've tried it both ways and prefer using the cocoa as I think it provides that thick texture I love.
But I have tried it with Lily's sugar free chocolate chips sweetened with stevia and I've also tried it with Choczero chocolate chips my hubby bought me for Christmas. But just to be clear, those do have dextrin which I am not a fan of.
Can I Swap out the Cottage Cheese?
If you really don't want to try this cottage cheese pudding with cottage cheese, you could replace it with ricotta cheese or full fat Greek yogurt, but your nutritional information will not be the same as listed below in the printable recipe card.
You won't nearly have as high protein with either of those as you will with cottage cheese.
Can I swap the sweetener?
Yes, if you don't want to use liquid Monk fruit, you could swap it but I wouldn't recommend using a granulated sweetener as this delicious dessert wouldn't be nice and smooth in texture.
You could use a low carb powdered sweetener if you prefer. Here's my Conversion Chart to help you determine how much to use of another sweetener.
Can I replace the Heavy Whipping Cream?
The heavy cream helps to turn this easy dessert from a pudding consistency to more of a thick mousse. If you don't have it on hand, you could swap it with cream cheese.
Flavor Options
Flavor extracts are fantastic to transform any keto recipe. I mentioned in the recipe card below to use coffee extract to make this a mocha mousse but if you're not a fan of mocha, no problem!
Make this a Chocolate Mint Mousse by using peppermint extract.
Even though this is a homemade chocolate mousse, you could also add vanilla extract which enhances the sweetness. Or just leave out any extracts and keep it plain chocolate mousse, still a delicious recipe!
How to Store Cottage Cheese Keto Mousse
Just cover this healthy treat with plastic wrap on each serving glass or add the entire recipe to an airtight container and refrigerate until you're ready to enjoy it. You can indulge immediately though it does get even thicker as it's sits in the fridge!

If we substitute whey protein for the collagen, do we use the same amount?

Chocolate Mousse : very expensive ingredients, to start with. The ingredients stuck to sides of blender- had to keep pushing them down. Hard to get out of my large high speed blender. Used Stevia Extract , and turned out very tart . next time will try with the liquid monk fruit; but that is very expensive and hard to find ; and seems like alot of liquid monk fruit to use- most of the time you only use so many drops in other recipes - again , very expensive.
Brenda Bennett
I never said to use stevia extract and you felt it tasted tart which means, your sweetener wasn't sweet enough for your taste buds. Also right in my blog post, I say the tools to use is a high speed blender and yes you do need to scrape the sides, that's just the way these ingredients work, it's not my recipe, it's fact.

I was a little nervous to try this because I'm not a fan of cottage cheese but I have successfully hidden it in a smoothie before so I went for it! DELICIOUS!! It is not salty from the cottage cheese. I had all the ingredients except I used stevia chocolate drops that I had on hand instead of the monk fruit. Thank you for an easy to make delicious recipe!!!
Brenda Bennett
Thanks so much for sharing!

O M G!!!! This is absolutely delicious!! I do not have a high speed blender so I tried this using the Nutribullet. Success! It worked. I also substituted the collagen peptides with Whey Protein Isolate (chocolate). Nor did I have liquid monk fruit so I used Sweet Leaf chocolate flavored stevia. I also used the coffee extract! I love how Brenda teaches how how to swap ingredients when you don’t have what she happens to be using! 🥰

Thanks so much!

Thank You for another great recipe! I have to buy 2 tubs of cottage cheese because I always eat it before I make a recipe with it. Its my quick go to when I come home hungry.
